Morten Søberg

Director of Government Relations, SpareBank 1 Gruppen

Morten Søberg (1969) has worked as Director of Government Relations at SpareBank 1 Gruppen since 2014. He is also a member of Noregs Bank’s Supervisory Council after being elected to this role by the Norwegian parliament in 2017. He has previously served three years at Deputy Minister of Finance in the Norwegian government. Moreover, Søberg has worked in the Research Department of Statistics Norway and as a political advisor for the standing committees of finance and constitutional affairs in the Norwegian parliament.

Morten Søberg was educated at the University of Oslo (PhD in experimental economics) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (BSc in economics and philosophy).

Søberg has so far publish six books on economics, politics and writing. His last publication (“Svalbard! Pengar!”, Spartacus forlag, 2022) deals with the fascinating monetary history in Svalbard where coal companies issued banknotes and coins. Another essay of his – “Nynorskens lys”, Samlaget, 2018 – includes a novel analysis of the famous Lewis chessmen.

Morten Søberg is the founder of the NFT-project www.svalbard.money, sits on the board of Oslo Nye Sparebanks fond and is an alumnus of the renowned boys’ choir Nidarosdomens guttekor in Trondheim.
